With political news somewhat on hold until the report on Iraq comes in, there is not much activity showing up on our candidate monitors. We have seen a tiny bit of interest in John McCain, Fred Thompson, John Edwards, Al Gore and John Kerry (really). It is fair to say that the interest shown in these individuals is extrememly weak, but the other candidates are not registering any interest at all this week.
It is rather interesting that many recent hits on www.canditatestuff.com are coming from a RushLimbaugh domain!

Sizzling Summer
As the heat of summer increases, so too does interest in the presidential candidates. And the online activity I am monitoring shows barely a blip for Mitt Romney while all the other Republicans are even less fortunate.
The intense interest in Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama seems to have quieted. Perhaps we know as much about them as we need to know at this point. Most interest is currently being focused on, drumroll please, Al Gore! In the past week Mr. Gore has lit up the charts here. There is also a bit of activity in the Biden and Richardson camps.
And if you like to think of investing in keepsakes, perhaps this is the time to grab up a McCain button or magnet. They may become obsolete soon. As for Fred Thompson, who knows if he will or if he won't—it is far more fun and infinitely less demanding to be on the fence.
If you follow politics, have you selected a candidate? Have you actively promoted that person with a sticker, t-shirt, hat, or just a little magnet on the refrig? We offer a great selection of items for the top 11 candidates at CANDIDATESTUFF.COM. Check it out!

Following the Candidates in early June
We adjusted our method of monitoring presidential candidates and the interest they generate. Once word is out that candidates are being compared, some of their followers go to any extreme to make their leader look best! One way they do that is to continually click on ads for a particular candidate. This distorts the real interest in the candidate and the poor advertisers may find themselves a bit poorer it they are paying "per click."
With our new monitoring tools, the first 5 days of June shows no surprises. Most interest centers on Obama, Hillary, Rudy and Al Gore. Interest in Al Gore is growing now that we know it is a "maybe" that he will run.
Without Rudy Giuliani interest in the Republican candidates is weak. Or perhaps no one dares to wear a hat, shirt or be seen with a Republican bumper sticker this time around even though they may support a Republican candidate.
We noticed searches for "anti-GOP" and "anti-Bush" in this data. This is new.
Fred Thompson is now in our candidate ring since being profiled in the news this past week or two. So far no one has searched our www.CandidateStuff.com for him. If you have a favorite candidate, check out the thousands of items we promote for Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Chuck Hagel, John Edwards, Bill Richardson and Fred Thompson. If there is another person you want to see in the lineup, please let me know.

Hats, buttons, bumper stickers!
You asked for more items to support your presidential candidates. We did our homework! check out www.candidatestuff.com for bumper stickers, magnets, hats, bags, buttons and more. Start by looking at candidates who have "hats in the ring." Find your candidate, a great design and see the shirts and other merchandise using the same design.
This is a fun way to support your candidate and tell the world about him or her. There is no order to the nine hats we currently display. You'll find: Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Chuck Hagel and John Edwards.
Does anyone want Al Sharpton, Fred Thompson, Dennis Kucinich?? Bill Richardson to be added next!
We'll report back on the most popular designs and candidate trends.

The March Swing Is On
It is fascinating how trends shift over time. Looking at data spanning a period of time can conceal slight shifts which may indicate coming trends. In the previous post, covering the first half of March, Obama was trailing in some respects. Looking at just the last four days is a different story!
From March 16 through today it appears that Barack Obama has had slightly more people searching online for information about him than any other of the candidates I am tracking. But Hillary is very close. Al Gore is in the third spot, but he is pulling less than half the count that Hillary shows. Giuliani, Romney and McCain have trailed off considerably since last week's CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) gathering. John McCain is nearly falling off my radar!
If we consider that the "click thru rate" on ads for these candidates' caps reflects some dimension of seriousness about the candidates, then it is an important measure to watch. For this period of days Hillary Clinton's leads the pack, with a rate three times that of Obama and double Al Gore.
What does it all mean? That is hard to say since there are many months to go before the election possibilities tighten and many months with time for gaffes and stumbles. One thing is certain, there seems increased interest in the Republican candidates when they have an event, but that interest is not sustained much beyond the event. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Al Gore—by contrast—seem to shuffle positions and yet all continue to be of great interest to people. Perhaps the pundits are correct in saying that the Republican side needs some new candidates.

Changing March Political Winds
Looking at the Month of March through the 16th, the most interest shown online in my survey is for Rudy Giuliani. In fact, more than twice as many people looked for information about him than about any of the other candidates I am following. The next tier of candidates is a close call between Mitt Romney, Al Gore and Hillary Clinton. John McCain edges out Barack Obama who is bringing up the rear when looking at the March data so far.
Evaluating the "click thru" rate — the percent of people who click on ad an they see — Hillary is in the lead and a close second is Obama. Al Gore is next. The other candidates fall way behind these leaders in clicks.

Republicans Wake Up in March So Far
With 12 days of data for March 2007, it seems like the previously lackluster interest shown in the possible Republican presidential candidates has ignited. Of the candidates we are tracking the top three are Republicans! Rudy leads the pack with the most interest shown in him. Romney is second, but with less than half the searches recorded as has Rudy. John McCain trail Mitt Romney but not by very much.
On the previously red-hot Democratic side the leader is Al Gore. Yes, Al Gore! He leads both Hillary and Barack Obama. But Hillary is not far behind Al, while Obama seems to be slipping.
In looking at the rate of those who see the various candidate caps ads and click for more details, both Hillary and Obama lead all the candidates and are nearly tied.
Is it time to get that cap and show support of your candidate?

March 4-7 results
If we compare the past 4 days to the first week of March there are a few interesting things to note.
Over these few days Hillary is still leading the pack, but very close on her heals is Rudy Giuliani. Al Gore is now trailing Hillary on the democratic side but leading Barack Obama. In fact, Obama seems to be dropping behind as the days move ahead — for this time period he is registering 25% of the interest that Hillary is seeing. This is down considerably from him leading all candidates last month.
Romney and Obama are running closely but way behind the leaders. McCain and Richardson are having problems leaving the cellar.
Obama does lead the pack in terms of "click rate." He has a higher percent of people clicking to get info on caps than the other candidates. Next highest is Al Gore, followed closely by Hillary. Rudy and Romney's people do not seem to be much interested in clicking on hats!

First week in March results
Using my method of tracking interest in the candidates for president in the 2008 election, there is a lot more jostling for position apparent than shown in the official reporting. Leaders change frequently here.
Take the first week of March, for instance. Hillary Clinton — in my tracking — is leading all the candidates by a large margin! She is getting 25% more people looking for information about her than Barack Obama, the number two candidate this week.
Al Gore and Rudy Giuliani are nearly tied and closing in on Obama this week. Bill Richardson and John McCain each seem to have few people searching for data on them, and Mitt Romney is considerably ahead of these two at the bottom, although well behind the top four candidates.
If we follow the earlier assumption that clicking on an ad for a candidate's campaign hat indicates a more committed follower, then there is little change in candidate ranking order this week. Gore moves considerably ahead of Rudy when looking at "clicks." McCain and Richardson, in the click contest, drop off the radar! There is no interest shown in clicking on ads for either of these two folks.
If you want to announce your candidate in this race, why not get their cap?

Is March Al Gore's Month?
Granted we are only on day one of March—but my online activity monitors are indicating more interest in Al Gore than any other of the candidates I am following. Hillary and Obama are still each generating more interest than approximately all the Republican possible and actual candidates combined.

The Democrats
As Obama and Hillary battle it out for who is the anointed candidate something very interesting is happening. Back around mid-February most pre-primary interest shown in my stats was for either Obama or Hillary.
But since that time there has been movement towards Rudy Giuliani on the Republican side and Al Gore on the Democratic side. Yes, you see that correctly. Each day Al has garnered a bit more online activity.
Looking at just the past three days, Al Gore surpassed BOTH Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama! More people have searched for information on Al, more have clicked on the ads for Al Gore hats than for either Barak or Hillary. Looking at only data from today, Al Gore is way ahead of both so-called from runners on the Democratic side!
Will Al run is the big question. One thing he has is a message, a message he has worked on for years and one we know he believes. Can that compare to Barak or Hillary? Will we get the chance to re-elect Al Gore in 2008?
Is it time for an Al Gore cap?

Five Days of Data
How are the presidential candidates faring as far as certain online searches about them? Looking at Obama and Hillary there are some interesting observations. On January 15 three times more people searched for Obama than Hillary in our online experiment. We are making an assumption that the most serious supporters will be those who click on a link to view candidate hats. On Feb 15th three times more people clicked on a Hillary link than on Obama's link.
Scanning the period Feb 13-15 this is what I see: Nearly six times more people were interested in Obama than Hillary by search count. BUT more people followed a link to her hats than to his. What can be concluded? As this week has progressed there is a growing interest in Hillary and more of her supporters -- as evidenced in their clicking on a link to see caps -- are seriously interested in her candidacy.
There is little interest in Gore, Richardson or Rudy in my unscientific survey. Twice as many people showed interest in McCain as did in Romney during Feb 11-15. But not a single McCain searcher clicked to see his hats. Does that mean they are not very serious and would not wear a McCain cap? There were a handful of individuals ready to click on the link to Romney hats.
The percentage of people who click on the link to hats compared to the number of people who see the ads with link to hats is called the "click thru rate." During Feb 11-15 Hillary's click thru rate was four times that of Obama. On Feb 11 they had about the same click thru rate, on the 12th she was double him, on the 13th she was ten times him! Her click thru rate the next two days was between 6 to 8 times his. So she is clearly picking up interested followers.

Who Leads the Pack?
Is there a direct correlation between the time TV news devotes to the various presidential candidates and the interest in them shown by online searching? Hmmm...yesterday was Obama's announcement.
Looking at my very unscientific poll using just my data for today it seems like there is some bit of interest stirring for the Republican players. Romney and McCain both show some online searches, but the most searches for a Republican (non-)candidate are for Rudy today. And Romney bests McCain if you are counting. Being hawkish on the war may not be a good way to get votes, Rudy is trying that today so we'll be interested in checking his support tomorrow.
Now on to the wild Democratic online searches for presidential candidates. Note that at the moment we are not following John Edwards.
There is basically no interest in Al Gore or Bill Richardson today — or yesterday. The leaders in the blue camp are still Obama and Hillary. Obama's followers have slowed a bit since yesterday's feeding frenzy and Hillary's have become more active. In today's searches she is closing the gap with Obama. Both Hillary and Obama are generating an incredible amount of interest compared to their Democratic and Republican peers.

Hunting for Hats, the Process
I hunted through hundreds of hats for seven different candidates. The available designs for each candidate were quite telling. There were many hats for Obama and Hillary and I had to limit my choices.
In the caps catagorized as promoting Hillary for president there were many hats with negative comments. These were created by people and deliberately mislabeled so someone searching to promote Hillary would come across these less-than-nice choices. I removed all of those from my selection.
About half the hats for Bill Richardson were for his 2006 run for Governor, not the 2008 presidential election. A large percent of the hats for Rudy said "I Love Rudy" or "Rudy Loves Me." The other candidates had one or two such hats, but not Rudy! He won the contest for most hats with a heart on them.
Mitt Romney's hats had many negative slogans. I removed all that I noticed. John McCain and John Edwards didn't seem to generate much interest in those people who create the graphics for hats. I couldn't find enough caps for Edwards to create a web page and McCain's selections are slim.
Several cap designs for Al Gore mentioned "re-elect" Al Gore! And to keep things "light" I included a page of Dick Cheney hats which carry messages right from the news. See the hat categories.

Grab Your Candidate's Hat!
Jump on the bandwagon of your candidate and make yourself a billboard suggesting that person as the next president.
Here's what I did to make it easy. I sorted through hundreds of popular cap designs for Obama, Hillary, McCain, Rudy, Romney, Richardson, Al Gore and even Mr. Cheney. I selected the best of those designs, none made by me, and made them available online for you to easily view and purchase. If you purchase one a small commission comes my way. I also pay to advertise these selections of caps promoting possible presidents.
It is one way to generate interest in the race. One way to focus the national debate on the qualities we need in a leader and to hold the various candidates up to scrutiny.
Grab a hat today and help promote interest in our election!
